هذا الكتاب هو تحيين لمبحث قديم في حُلَّة جديدة وفي طبعة منقَّحة، عرف القدماء، اليونان على وجه التحديد، سلوكاً هو "العيش بالتفلسف"، في ما وراء التصوُّر النظري للفلسفة؛ وقام المعاصرون (مارتا نوسبوم، بيير هادو، أندري جون فولكه، ميشيل فوكو، جون غرايش وغيرهم) بإعادة التفكير في هذا المبحث القديم بأساليب جديدة ومصطلحات راهنة.
وجه التماثل بين المعالجات القديمة والتأويلات المعاصرة هو أن الفلسفة لا تُختزَل في نسقٍ منطقي من الإستدلالات والبراهين، بل هي طريقة في العيش تقوم على ثلاثة أساليب أساسية هي التجربة والرياضة والعلاج.
قام غرايش، بالإعتماد على الفلاسفة المعاصرين الذين اعتنوا بالمسألة بقراءة النصوص القديمة، بالنظر في جوهر "التجربة الفلسفية" كما مورست عبر العصور، ثم "الرياضة الروحية" بدراسة علاقة الفلسفة بالتجربة الروحية، الدينية منها والميتافيزيقية.
وأخيراً "العلاج" بتحليل ما سُمي عند القدماء الطب الروحاني وترجماته المعاصرة إلى الطب الفلسفي، وكيفية علاج أمراض النفس بمناهج فلسفية هي إجراءات عملية من التفلسف والتبادل الرمزي واللغوي، بمعنى دور الكلمة في علاج النفس ودور المفهوم الفلسفي في تصحيح التصوُّرات والأحكام والظنون.
