إن إدارة المعلومات وتنظيمها أخذت إتجاهاً حديثاً بعد إستخدام الحاسوب، إذا أطلق مصادر المعلومات الإلكترونية ومصادر المعلومات المحوسبة التي ظهرت على أشكال متعددة من ما هو متاح على شبكة الإنترنت والأقراص المضغوطة (CD-ROM) لما تتميز به من خصائص أهمها سعة التخزين الكبيرة وسرعة إسترجاع المعلومات من هذه الأقراص لخدمة المستفيدين، وأن نظام إدارة المعلومات أصبح مهما لدى العديد من المكتبات ومراكز المعلومات حول العالم، وأن أستخدام نظام محدد يتم تطوير، وفق برمجيات إدارة المعلومات والمكتبات عالية التقنية يكون فيه من الخصائص، والميزات المتطورة والمرونة والسهولة من الأمور الهامة بحيث يستطيع موظفو المكتبات، ومراكز المعلومات إستيعابه والتعامل مع بيئته بشكل جيد، وأن تكون تطبيقاته من السهولة حتى تساعد المستفيد من الوصول إلى المعلومات والمعرفة المنظمة بسرعة وسهولة من خلال الحاسوب لمواجهة متطلبات العصر في مجتمع المعلومات العالمي، الذي أطلق عليه مجتمع المعرفة بعد ثورة الإتصالات والمعلومات.
