موضوع الكتاب على التحديد هو بيان ما وقع من خطأ أو شبهة في النسخة التي وقف عليها الرازيان من تاريخ البخاري، والشواهد تقضي أن أبا زرعة استقرأ تلك النسخة من أولها إلى ونبه على ما رآه خطأ أو شبهة مع بيان الصواب عنده، وترك بياضاً في مواضع. ثم تلاه أبو حاتم فوافقه تارة وخالفه أخرى، واستدرك مواضع. وإذ كان البخاري والرازيان من أكابر أئمة الحديث والرواية وأوسعهم حفظاً وأثقبهم فهماً وأسدهم نظراً، من فائدة هذا الكتاب أن كل ما في التاريخ من لم يعترضه الرازيان فهو على ظاهرة من الصحة بإجماعهم، ومثله بل أولى ما ذكرا أنه الصواب وحكيا عن التاريخ خلافه والموجود في نسخ التاريخ على ما حكياه وذكرا أنه خطأ معرفة الخلاف ليجتهد الناظر في معرفة الصواب وكثير من ذلك لم نبه عليه في الجرح والتعديل.
ونظراً لأهمية الكتاب تم الاعتناء به من خلال عملية تحقيق حيث تمّ فيها التركيز على المواضع المتعقبة في الكتاب حيث وجد المحقق بأن تلك التعقبات تبدأ باسم رجل من المترجمين في التاريخ، ثم قد يكون الاعتراض متعلقاً بذاك الرجل نفسه، وقد يكون متعلقاً باسم أو معنى في ضمن تلك الترجمة. وفي عدة مواضع لا يذكر اسم صاحب الترجمة بل تحكي عبارة من أثنائها، وقد يتعلق بترجمة واحدة اعتراضان أو أكثر. لذا قام المحقق بوضع أرقام متسلسلة بحسب التراجم، واضعاً عقب الرقم بين حاجزين رقم تلك الترجمة في تاريخ البخاري المطبوع مضيفاً إلى ما لم يذكر فيه اسم صاحب ذاك الاسم بين قوسين، معلقاً على ما ظهر له عند مراجعته لتلك الترجمة في التاريخ وفي الجرح والتعديل وأيضاً عند مراجعته لمواضع أخرى منها ومن غيرها بحسب ما تقتضيه الحال، ملتزماً ببيان عدم التطابق في العبارة المحكية في هذا الكتاب عن التاريخ لما في التاريخ المطبوع، دون الالتزام ببيان ذلك إلا حيث يختلف المعنى اختلافاً بيناً وما كان في الأصل خطأ، وبان له أن من خطأ النساخ أصلحه في المتن منبهاً في التعليق على ما وقع في الأصل.
