ماذا تعني (الحجة) مفهوماً، واصطلاحاً؟ وما هي حقيقتها؟ وما هي أنواعها وأبرز آثارها؟ وماذا يعني الدليل أو الطريق والأمارة في لسان الأيات والروايات، وفي مصطلح الأصوليين؟ ذلك هو المحور الذي تدور عليه رحى الكتاب.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن الحجة هي المستند والمرجع الأول والأخير، لكل العلوم والمعارف، وعلى الحجة قامت الأديان السماوية، بل وعليها يقوم عالما الدنيا والآخرة. إذ "إن لله على الناس حجتين: حجة ظاهرة، وحجة باطنة، فأما الظاهرة فالرسل والأنبياء والأئمة، وأما الباطنة فالعقول".
ويتضمن الكتاب بحثاً موجزاً عن مجموعة منتخبة من أهم مصاديق (الحجة) وهي التي تكون مسائله. وقد جرى انتخاب المسائل التي لم تطرح (كحجية ذوات المعصومين وصفاتهم)، أو التي اشتد الخلاف حول كونها حجة أو لا (كالقطع)، أو التي استقر رأي المشهور على عدم كونها حجة (كالوهم في الجملة)، وعليه يعالج الكتاب مسائل مثل: هل يعقل جعل الحجية لـ (الوهم)؟ وهو بحث أصولي- فلسفي، وعلى فرض الأمكان والصحة، فهل هناك أنواع من الوهم قد اعتبرها الشارع أو العقلاء، حجة؟ وهو بحث يرتبط بعلم الأصول والفقه والقواعد الفقهية إضافة إلى موقع مبحث الحجة في علم الأصول التي يعتبرها المؤلف من المبادئ التصورية أو التصديقية لهذا العلم، أو من مسائل أي علم الأصول...
