موضوع هذا الكتاب موضوع بكر، لم يتطرق إليه أحد قبل الدكتور محمد وصفي وهو محاولة تعيين زمن إرسال أشهر الرسل والأنبياء مع استنباط أهم أركان رسالاتهم وذلك بالرجوع بشكل رئيسي إلى القرآن، ثم ذكر ما نقله علماء الإسلام من معلومات، مع محاولة المقارنة والاستئناس بما عند أهل الكتاب من أخبار وكذلك بما توصلت إليه الأبحاث العلمية.
لقد أوضح المؤلف أن الله أرسل الأنبياء والرسل على توالي القرون والعصور يبنون للناس سبل الرشاد، ويمدونهم بالتعاليم التي تقوّي عزيمتهم، ويزودونهم بالأفكار الصالحة التي يستطيعون أن يهتدوا بهديها، والتي تساعدهم على التمييز بين الظلام والنور، وبين الهدى والضلال، وبين الطريق المستقيم والطريق المعوج الذي يؤدي إلى الهلاك والفشل والدمار.
ثم يبين المؤلف بعد ذلك أن جميع النبيين بعثهم الله بعقيدة الإسلام، التي كانت تتلاءم مع البشرية والإنسانية على ممر القرون والعصور مع اختلاف البيئات، بالرغم من تقلبات الزمن وتغير عقلية الناس قرناً بعد قرن وجيلاً بعد جيل.
