إنها تحكي قصة عائلة كريمة من جزيرة كريت، اقتلعها الغرب من ارضها، بعد تغذيته حروباً أهلية مدمرة فيها، وفرض على السلطان العثماني "عبد الحميد" تهجير المسلمين من سكانها، فاختار لهم السلطان إسم "المهاجرين" لا "المهجّرين" ، ونقلهم معزّزين مكرّمين إلى مناطق خاضعة لسلطانه، فكان نصيب "آل بكراكي" مدينة طرابلس الشام.
وكاتب الرواية حفيد أحد البطال المهاجرين، الذين اقاموا في طرابلس، وترك قلبه في كريت، وكان يسمع من والده عن جده مأساة كريت، ويشوّقه للتعرّف عليها. ولما شبّ الحفيد شدّه حنين خفي إلى زيارة بلد أجداده، على الرغم من اندماجه في وطنه الجديد، وافتخاره بالإنتساب إليه، وحبه أهله، الذين أصبح واحداً منهم. فأحسن وصف كريت في روايته بجبالها الشامخة، ووديانها السحيقة، وتناول تاريخها وتقاليد أهلها وبطولاتهم، وأرّخ بقلمه السيّال، ولغته الجميلة، وعاطفته الجيّاشة، مأساة المهاجرين.
إنها رواية تاريخية، رائعة، ممتعة، ومفيدة.
