لم تعد السيارة شيئاً كمالياً، بل أصبحت حاجة ضرورية تنسجم مع تطور الحياة والمجتمعات. والنقل عموماً أصبح مقياساً يُقاس به تقدم الأمم والجماعات، ومع ان لدى الإنسان وسائل نقل عديدة فإن السيارة هي الأداة الأكثر إستخداماً، والأكثر إنتاجاً بالتالي.
وما زال الدور الذي تلعبه في حياتنا يتعاظم. وكنتيجة لذلك، أصبح عدد الأشخاص الذين يقتنون السيارة عدداً كبيراً جداً. ولأن حوادث السيارات إزدادت بشكل طردي، فإن الباحثين والمتخصصين قد بحثوا الجوانب التي تتصل بالسيارة والسائق، والطريق، لكي يتوصلوا إلى العوامل التي تتسبب في وقوع هذه الحوادث. فالسيارة قد تكون سبباً رئيسياً في وقوع الحوادث المرورية، إذ قد يكون بها عيب ما في أجهزة التحكم أو القيادة، أو الإيقاف وغير ذلك.
ومن هنا جاء إهتمام الدول المتحضرة بالمواصفات القياسية التي يجب توافرها في السيارة عند إنتاجها، والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يبحث في هذا الموضوع. وهو في أربعة فصول يبحث الفصل الأول في حوادث المرور وأنواعها وأسبابها، كما يركز على ضرورة الإهتمام بمواصفات السلامة في السيارة والطريق. ويقدم الفصل الثاني تحليلات لإحصائيات السيارات وحوادث المرور بينما يقدم الفصل الثالث بحثاً في المواصفات القياسية للسلامة في السيارة. أما الفصل الرابع فهو بحث في المواصفات القياسية للسلامة في الطريق، وضرورة مراعاة حجم الحركة المتوقعة فيه لا عند إنشائه وحسب بل حتى العمر الذي يصمم له الطريق.
