يمثل علم الباثولوجي في الطب علم المشكلات الاجتماعية او علم العلل الاجتماعية في علم الاجتماع الذي يقوم بتشخيص الأمراض الاجتماعية الناجمة عن التغيرات الاجتماعية التي تحصل دائماً وبشكل مستمر داخل المجتمع سواء كان ذلك بتأثيرات خارجية او بتأثيرات داخلية او نقيض التغيرات الاجتماعية.
هذا التخصص الحقلي يحمل تسمية (علم) لأنه يدرس العلل الاجتماعية الذي يضم علم الاجرام وعلم النفس الاجتماعي ويغذي علم الاجتماع الحضري والصناعي وعلم السكان بتحليل علمي للمشكلات التي تظهر في حقول دراساتهم لأن مواضيع الجنوح والانحراف والعنف والعدوان والتحيز والإساءة للأطفال والانتحار والاكتئاب والتي يتناولها هذا العلم.
يتناول هذا الكتاب المشكلات الإجتماعية في ستة ابواب تناول الباب الأول المدخل النظري من حيث تعريف المشكلات الاجتماعية وتحديدها ومحاكاتها والإطار المرجعي لها. أما الباب الثاني من الكتاب فيدور حول المشكلات النفسية والإجتماعية وأهمها: مشكلة الإساءة للأطفال والعنف ومشكلة الفقر والإنتحار والإكتئاب والجنوح. ويناقش الباب الثالث مشكلة تلوث البيئة وأنواعها وكيفية المحافظة على البيئة، أما الباب الرابع فقد تناول المجتمع والمشكلات الإجتماعية من حيث تعريف المجتمع، عناصر المجتمع، أشكال المجتمع وتركيبه وأخيراً أنواع المجتمعات. ويدور الباب الخامس حول الأسس الإجتماعية للتربية من منظور أن التربية عملية تطبيع اجتماعي ومفهوم التفاعل الإجتماعي وتكوين الإتجاهات وأهمية المعايير والأدوار الاجتماعية. أما الباب السادس والأخير فناقش الرؤى المستقبلية من حيث الأسرة والشباب والقيم.
