تكمن أهمية العلاقات الروسية الإيرانية من جهة في التأثير على مجريات الصراع الدولي الدائر حالياً على مناطق النفوذ، وعلى طريق بلورة التحالفات الدولية في مواجهة المنهجية الأمريكية، من ناحية أخرى في التأسيس لتكوين عالم متعدد الأقطاب. تتبوأ فيه الأمم المتحدة الدور القيادي في حل النزاعات الدولية. وفي وقت تسعى فيه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية جاهدة، لتهميش الدور الإقليمي والدولي لكل من روسيا وإيران، والعمل على تطويق هاتين الدولتين اللتين تحظيان بموقع جيوسياسي هام بمحاذاة المناطق التي تعتبرها الولايا ت المتحدة ضمن مجال مصالحها الحيوية. وكانت فكرة كتابة هذه الدراسة في البداية تنصب على العلاقات الروسية – الإيرانية بعد إنحلال الإتحاد السوفياتي ولكن فقر المكتبة العربية للمراجع التي توثق تاريخ هذه العلاقات، ووجود بعض الثغرات في تحليل طبيعة هذه العلاقات في مراحل هامة من تاريخ كلتا الدولتين، خاصة بعد ثورة أكتوبر الإشتراكية والدور السوفياتي في مساعدة رضا خان في القضاء على حكم الأسرة القاجارية وإستلام الأسرة البهلوية السلطة في إيران، وملاحظتي أنه رغم وجود العديد من الدراسات التي تتناول هذه العلاقات، إلا أنها عالجت فترات زمنية متفرقة وإفتقرت إلى المعالجة الموضوعية والمترابطة، فسعيت بتقديم دراسة تعالج مختلف المراحل كي أقدم للقارئ المهتم في الشؤون الروسية والإيرانية، صورة أشمل لتاريخ وطبيعة هذه العلاقات، منذ بدايتها وصولاً إلى تحليل العلاقات الروسية الإيرانية الحالية، والدور الذي تلعبه ويمكن أن تلعبه في الصراع الجيوسياسي الحالي الذي تشهده الساحة الدولية، أملاً أن أكون قد وفقت في ذلك.
