(خزانة يحملها الفقيه في كُمِّه، وعباب زاخر يقصر كبائر المصنفات عن يمِّه). هكذا عرَّف العلامة الإمام أحمد بن عمر بن محمد المرادي المزجَّد كتابه "العباب"، وهو بحق كما سمَّاه، فقد جاء محيطاً بمعظم نصوص الإمام الشافعي والأصحاب.
إذ كان قد لخَّص فيه «روضة الطالبين وعمدة المفتين» للإمام النووي، وأضاف إليها فروعاً حصلها بخبرته وسعة اطلاعه من متفرِّق كتب الأصحاب، وهذه ميزة هامة تضاف للجمع والتلخيص. وجمع فيه بين مسائل "الروض" و"تجريد الزوائد"، وبذل في تصنيفه الجهد الجهيد.
و"العباب" اليوم يطبع لأول مرة محققاً مدققاً على نسختين نفيستين، منقولتين عن نسخة المؤلف، واعتني به عناية فائقة. وقد قيدنا بعض الحواشي التي توجد بهوامش المخطوط وكتبها بعض العلماء؛ وذلك لأهميتها من جهة، ولمزيد الفائدة من جهة أخرى، لأنها تعد مضيئة لما استغلق من بعض العبارات.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب وإحاطته بمعظم نصوص الشافعي تنبه له الإمامان العلمان ابن حجر والرملي لما حواه من بحر زاخر فشرحاه. بيد أن الإمام ابن حجر اخترمته المنية قبل أن يتمه، ولكونه من آخر ما كتب ابن حجر صرح المتأخرون بأن الاعتماد على ما في شرح ابن حجر للعباب "الإيعاب" نظراً لأنه من أخريات مؤلفاته. بينما الإمام الرملي شرحه شرحاً وافياً وأتمه كله في عدة مجلدات.
