الشوكاني، محمد بن علي (1173هـ ـ 1250هـ، 1759-1834م).
محمد بن علي بن محمد بن عبد الله الشوكاني اليمني. فقيه مجتهد من كبار علماء اليمن وصاحب كتاب نيل الأوطار، ولد ببلدة شوكان باليمن ونشأ في صنعاء، وتلقى العلم على شيوخها، وجد في طلبه فأكثر من المطالعة والحفظ والسماع، حتى صار عالمًا كبيرًا يشار إليه بالبنان، توافد عليه الطلاب من كل مكان. اشتغل بالقضاء والإفتاء وكان داعية إلى الإصلاح والتجديد، ترك التقليد وسلك طريق الاجتهاد بعد أن اجتمعت فيه شرائطه كاملة. ترك مؤلفات كثيرة تدل على سعة علمه وسلامة منهجه. كثر خصومه كما كثر المعجبون به بسبب دعوته إلى الاجتهاد والتجديد. توفي بصنعاء بعد عمر زاخر بالعطاء.
من مصنفاته: نيل الأوطار في الحديث؛ فتح القدير في التفسير، وهو متوسط الحجم محرر العبارة.

هذا الكتاب هو أحد مجموعات الحديث النبوي المقتصرة على فضائل أفراد بيت النبوة والرجال العشرة المبشرين بالجنة والصحابة المتميزين الذين خصهم النبي(ص) بالذكر وأشاد بفضلهم ومكانتهم.
ويحاول المؤلف في كتابه دمج فضائل آل البيت بفضائل غيرهم من الصحابة بعد أن رتبهم بحسب الأهمية.
وقد تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى خمسة أقسام؛ يتحدث القسم الأول عن فضائل الصحابة عموماً، ويتطرق في الثاني إلى فضائل العشرة المبشرين بالجنة، ويتناول الثالث فضائل آل البيت، ويتخصص الرابع في فضائل بقية الصحابة رجالاً ونساءً، ثم يختتم الخامس بفضائل التابعين والمجتمع الإسلامي عموماً.
يقدم الكتاب صورةً حيةً عن مجتمع المدينة، وعن الكوكبة المقربة التي كانت تحيط بالنبي(ص) من خلال تقارير المحدثين، لا المؤرخين.
