المصنف هو الإمام الفقيه رئيس الحنابلة في وقته أبو الفضل عبد الواحد بن عبد العزيز بن الحارث التميمي الحنبلي. عني بالعلوم وأملى الحديث بجامع المنصور. كان صدوقاً، دفن إلى جانب قبر الإمام أحمد. وقد صنف كتابه هذا لبيان معتقد الإمام أحمد بن حنبل رضي الله عنه، على هيئة الاختصار لا البسط، فيذكر فيه معتقد الإمام على هيئة السرد بدون ذكر أدلة من الكتاب والسنة، وذلك لأنه لم يؤلف كتاباً، إنما أراد أن يبين منهج الإمام أحمد بن حنبل رضي الله عنه. وكان واضحاً جلياً في الرسالة، عبر عن عقيدة الإمام أحمد بألفاظه وعباراته.
