يتحدث هذا البحث عن أخلاق الحرب عند الإمام علي رضي الله عنه مبيناً وجود علاقة وثيقة، وصلة أكيدة بين الأخلاق التي نادى بها القرآن مفصلاً، وبيّنها الرسول الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم في سنته، وبين الأخلاق التي التزم بها أمير المؤمنين في الحرب. وبعبارة أخرى: كل من يطالع أخلاق الحرب عند الإمام رضي الله عنه يجدها تنتسب في جوهرها وروحها إلى القرآن والسنة النبوية الشريفة.
يتكون البحث من: مقدمة، ومدخل، وبابين، حيث يختص الباب الأول ببيان أخلاق الحرب عند الإمام رضي الله عنه في عصر الرسول الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويشمل هذا الباب ثلاثة فصول، ومباحث ومطالب كرس البحث فيها على الغزوات والسرايا التي شهدها الإمام رضي الله عنه.
أما الباب الثاني، فقد تعهد بتوضيح أخلاق الحرب عند الإمام في أثناء خلافته، ويحتوي على ثلاثة فصول، ومباحث، ومطالب داخلة فيها، وتركز البحث فيها على أخلاق الإمام في معارك: الجمل، صفين، النهروان، وينتهي البحث إلى نتيجة فيها خلاصة ما توصلنا إليه من نتائج.
