تحمل كلمة (التصوف) بين طياتها عالمأً فريداً من الرؤى للنورانية الشفافة، كما تشير إلى نمط من الفكر والسلوك يتميز بخصوصية شديدة. وإذا كانت الحياة الصوفية تعكس أعمق وجهات النظر تجاه الدينوي، فإنها تمثل أيضاً: أعلى مظاهر التقوى الدينية النابعة صدق الرابطة بين الإنسان وخالقه، ولما كان المؤلف بصدد دراسة في التصوف والطريق الصوفي فقد اختص منه ذلك البحث المتعمق حول أصوله وقواعده، ومن هنا كان اهتمامه ببحث جوانب التصوف وقضاياه المختلفة، مع حرص المؤلف الدائم لإرسائه على قاعدة الكتاب والسنة، وحلّ النقاط المستشكلة فيه نظراً لتفرد الاصطلاح وخصوص المعنى.
وقد مثّل الكتاب خلاصة رحلتين، الرحلة الأولى هي المعراج الروحي الذي يرتقي فيه الصوفي من الخلف إلى الحق، من عالم الفناء الدنيوي إلى عالم البقاء في الحضرة الإلهية، وهذه الرحلة عبور متواصلة لدرجات السلم الروحي، تلك الدرجات التي جاءت إشارات الإمام الجيلاني (محبي الدين عبد القادر، المتوفى سنة 561هـ) مشتتة بين ثنايا كتبه ومؤلفاته، فجمع المؤلف عقدها في صعيد واحد يرسم ملامح (الطريق الصوفي) كما يراه الإمام الجيلاني.
وبيان هذا الطريق استغرق أبواب ثلاثة من الكتاب، مثل كل منها مرحلة من مراحل الطريق، يتعرض الباب الأول لبدء السلوك، والثاني يستعرض علامات الطريق التي غالباً ما يمر بها السالك في رحلة ارتقائه الروحي، ويتوقف الباب الباب الثالث عند منازل القرب والوصول حيث تناولت فصوله معالم غايات الطريق الصوفي. وأما المرحلة الثانية فقد كانت في ربوع الطريقة القادرية وفروعها، حيث تم التمهيد بفصل تناول سبل انتشار القادرية في العالم الإسلامي، ليمضي الحديث بعدها عن تفرعات القادرية بمصر. وتلك هي نهاية رحلة المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى عالم الطريق الصوفي وفروع القادرية بمصر.
