الأسطورة، الدين، الايديولوجيا، رموز ثلاث شكلت في رحلة الإنسان العقلية المعرفية مساراً سلكه وصولاً إلى العلم الذي انتهى إليه في نهاية المطاف في العصر الراهن، من خلال رحلة معرفية في حقب التاريخ المتعاقبة، يناقش الباحث التطور الفكري للإنسان الذي تراجعت عنده مكانة الطقوس السحرية-الأسطورية، وترميزات المخيال الاجتماعي، تحت وطأة التطبيقات العلمية-التكنولوجية، وثقل ومكانة الفلسفة العلمية في حياته الحديثة.
وقد أبرز الباحث أن هذا الميل بدأ بالتصدع، منذ سبعينات هذا القرن، من جراء الخيبة من الاشتراكية المطبقة، التي استلهمت نظرياً وطبقت عملياً أشد النظريات العلمانوية جموداً وتطرفاً وسوقية وحصيلة لإخفاق تجربة التنمية والتحديث في العالم الثالث، التي استزرعت (الصناعة) والتقنية، بدون اكتراث بالبيئة الثقافية-الاجتماعية، وبدون اكتراث بالإنسان، الذي من المفترض أن يكون غاية هذه التنمية، والحداثة. ونتيجة، أيضاً لتلعثم الروح الفاوستية الغربية.
ويقول الباحث بن العالم وبالمقابل بدأ يشهد (صحوة روحانية) في كل مكان، وعاد الإنسان من جديد، يبحث عن معنى لوجوده، خارج معايير الإنتاج-الاستهلاك. وازاء هذه الوضعية الجديدة، كان لا بد للباحث من إعادة التفكير مجدداً في قيمة أشكال الوعي الاجتماعي المختلفة، والأنماط المتعاقبة لتجاب الوعي الشمولية التي أعطت المغزى والهدفية للحياة، وكرست التلاقيم والألفة والأمان، وقادت إلى التحكم في السلوك الاجتماعي، مجيباً في كتابه هذا عن الأسئلة المثارة عن الكيفية التي يتمّ بها تركيب أشكال الوعي المتعاقبة في إطار الوعي الاجتماعي المعاصر، مبيناً الآثار التي يتركها الوعي التاريخي القديم في وعينا الراهن، موضحاً في النهاية كيفية الحكم على قيمة المخيال الاجتماعي أمام تقدم العلم ومعاييره.
