نشأته
ولد ونشأ في حي ساروجة الأثري بمدينة دمشق – سوريا والذي كان يسمى (استانبول الصغيرة)،الذي كان يقطنه مسؤلو الدولة التركية الحاكمة إذ ذاك- في حارة الورد، بمنزل عربي بالقرب من حمام الورد المشهور، ولا يزال إلى الآن ذلك المنزل قائماً، والده إسماعيل شيخو، وكان يشتغل والده بالتجارة، تُوفي والده في صغره، وأصبح أخوه محمد سليم مديراً للمدرسة الحربية أثناء الحكم العثماني.
دراسته
التحق العلاَّمة الكبير بالمدرسة الرشيدية في الثانية عشرة من عمره. ثم انتسب إلى الكلية الملكية العثمانية بدمشق "عنبر"، ونال عدة ثناءات في العهد التركي والفيصلي في سوريا، يوجد نسخ منها إلى الآن.

المكذب بالدين: امرؤ معرض عن الخالق منبع الكمالات و منار ينابيع الهدايات و موئل الخيرات, من أشاح عنه الله تعالى فقد أشاح عن الجنات, و أضاع المكرمات, و بالأمراض النفسية باء فتحول لدنياه الدنية إثر حرمانه لنفسه من الرحمة الإنسانية, و بذا فقد فتح وعاء نفسه و سقاها إلى الدناءة و الانحطاط. فانصب فيها الجفاء و القسوة و عدم الوفاء, و كان البخل و الجبن إلفه و أليفه و الكذب و الخيانة حليفه و كان نبراساً للدنيء من الأخلاق. ترى و أرى في تضاعيف هذا الكتاب القيم الثمين أن صفتاه من دع اليتيم و عدم الحض على طعام المسكين كاشف من الكواشف التي تظهر حقيقة هذا الإنسان المحروم من كل عطف و حنان, فاحذره أكثر مما تحذر الوحوش بل هو أشر من كل مخلوق و أخطر من كل حيوان و سبب ذلك كله عدم سلوكه عملياً طريق الايمان. فاحذر على نفسك و عليها أشفق من الحرمان و خف من سوء المصير و اسم بالايمان الحق إلى المقام العالي الرفيع مقام الأنس بالله و بك تأنس الخلائق غبطة أبدية في الجنان.
