ميرسيا الياد، مؤلف هذا الكتاب بحاثة مجري متخصص في الميثولوجيا وتاريخ الأديان. أكمل تحصيله العالي في جامعة بوخارست، ثم عمل أستاذاً لتاريخ الدين فيها قبل أن يهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة حيث استقبلته جامعة شيكاغو ومارس البحث والتدريس فيها حتى وقت قريب. وهو باحث معروف على النطاق الأكاديمي والنطاق العام بمؤلفاته الموسوعية في تاريخ الأديان وبنظريته الخاصة في الميثولوجيا.
يرى إلياد أن الأسطورة هي تاريخ مقدس يروي عن الأصول والبدايات الأولى، عن الأزمان التي ابتدرت فيها الآلهة الكون بكليته وشتى تفاصيله، ولكن الأسطورة لا تتخذ من هذه الأصول والبدايات موقفاً ذهنياً وصفياً، بل إنها تسعى دوماً إلى استعادة الأزمان المقدسة وزرعها في الزمن الجاري، من أجل الحياة في عالم غض نقي متجدد يشبه حالته عندما خرج من يد الخالق، ومن أجل إعادة تأسيس مستمر لهذا العالم.
وقد بسط الياد نظريته في عدد من المؤلفات منها، "أسطورة العود الأبدي" و"المقدس والدنيوي" و"أساطير وأحلام وأسرار" وهو يلقي في هذا الكتاب أضواء جديدة على النظرية، إلى جانب معالجته لتاريخ تأثير الأسطورة في الثقافة الإنسانية وصولاً إلى الزمن الحاضر.
