يعالج هذا الكتاب مسألة التنمية الاقتصادية في البلدان المختلفة، التي تحتل مكاناً رئيسياً في الفكر الاقتصادي العالمي المعاصر. إن التنمية الاقتصادية في البلدان المتخلفة لم تعد مسألة داخلية فقط. لقد أصبحت بإرتباطاتها الخارجية، الاقتصادية والتكنولوجية والمالية، مسألة دولية تشترك في إنجازها البلدان المتخلفة والمتطورة. والبلدان المتخلفة لا يمكنها أن تأمل بتحقيق التنمية، أو حتى مشاريع تنموية أحادية، بدون هذه العلاقة بين الداخل والخارج. وانطلاقاً من الترابط العضوي والحتمي للجانب الداخلي والخارجي للتنمية يحلل الكتاب بعض أهم مشكلات التنمية الاقتصادية، كالتصنيع والتصنيع والتمويل والتخصيص والعلاقات الاقتصادية الخارجية ثم موقع الدول المتخلفة في التقسيم الدولي للعمل في الظروف الاقتصادية العالمية المعاصرة وانعكاساتها على الأوضاع الاقتصادية لهذه الدول. في هذا الجزء يتجسّد الجانب العلمي-البحثي لمشكلة التنمية.
أما الجزء الأكاديمي-التعليمي فيتناول مفهوم النمو الاقتصادي والتنمية الاقتصادية ومؤشراتها الاقتصادية والديمغرافية والصحية ويطرح كذلك بعض النظريات الحديثة في التنمية، التي تتناول كيفية النهوض الاقتصادي والقضاء على التخلّف في البلدان المتخلفة.
