تحتل شاعرية أبي فراس الحمداني مكانة عالية في الشعر العربي ولم تكن منزلته كشاعر مبنية على المدح والهجاء تبعاً لمعايير الفن الشعري في عصره، وإنما قامت على "الاخوانيات" و"الفخر" و"الغزل"، وبلغت درجتها من الرفعة بفضل "الروميات" التي عكست شخصيته بكل ما فيها من البطولة والفروسية والإباء، والحفاظ على سمو الذات وكبريائها. وهذا الديوان يعكس مقومات شعر أبي فراس الغني بالخواطر والحكم والأمثال ومواقف الشكوى والعتاب والوصف والرثاء، إلى جانب قيمة هذا الشعر التاريخية فهو حقل يذكر الأعلام من الرجال والأماكن الجغرافية والبلدان والقبائل.
ولإطلاع القراء على جاء في هذا الديوان من إبداعات شعرية لأبي فراس الحمداني اعتنى بعد الرحمن المصطاوي بإخراج هذه الديوان في هذه الطبعة التي بين أيدينا والتي جاءت منقحة ومحققه، وذلك حتى يسهل مطالعتها من قبل القراء.
