يمثل هذا الكتاب مقدمة لفلسفة اللغة المعاصرة، وقد أضفت القوسين في ما يتعلق بالعنوان الإضافي الموسوم "والذهن" [= فلسفة اللغة (والذهن)]، لأن فلسفة اللغة وفلسفة الذهن يشكلان كلاً غير قابل للتفريق، يسمى أحياناً "نظرية المحتوى" [أو نظرية المضمون] ويهدف إلى إيضاح طبيعة العلاقات التي تقيمها التمثلات، اللغوية أو الذهنية، مع الواقع غير اللغوي أو غير الذهني.
من الأمور التي أضحت تمثل واقعاً أننا بدأنا نلاحظ، منذ ربع قرن، إنتقالاً كثيفاً لفلسفة اللغة نحو فلسفة الذهن، فمثلما كتب حديثاً مارتن ديفيس Martin Davies في مجلة تحمل عنواناً معبِّراً (الذهن واللغة)، قائلاً: "إن فلاسفة اللغة الذين وجدوا في سنوات الستينات [من القرن الماضي] أصبحوا فلاسفة للذهن في الثمانينيات والتسعينيات".
هذا الإنتقال هو أبعد عن أن يكون غير مفهوم، هناك نقاط مشتركة عديدة ما بين اللغة والفكر، بالشكل الذي يجعل من بعض النتائج المحصل عليها من خلال دراسة اللغة، قابلة للإستثمار من منظور نفسي وليس لغوي مثلما كان يحدث من قبل.
إذ أن الفكرة القائلة إن الفكر يشبه كثيراً لغة ما، تشكل هي نفسها موضوعاً مركزياً في فلسفة الذهن.
