يُثير هذا الكتابُ إشكالاً مُعاصراً مُهمّاً في فلسفة اللغة والدِّراسات اللسانيَّة، يتعلَّق بموضوع المضمون الدَّلاليّ للجُمَل في اللغة: أيشتملُ على معنّى مُحدَّد وثابت بناءً على التَّعاقدات اللسانيَّة، ام لا يشتمِلُ إلاّ على معنّى مُحتمل يُفَعِّلُهُ السِّياقُ ويُعَدِّلُهُ؟...
فقد أثارَتْ مناقشةُ هذا الإشكال سجالاً نظريّاً بين التَّيّار الحَرْفّيِ Literalism والتَّيّار السّياقيّ Contex - tualism حاولَ المؤلّفُ أن يَعرضَ أسُسَهُ النَّظريَّةَ في مُعطيات دلاليَّة وتداوليَّة مُهمَّة، معتمداً على التَّفاعلات اللسانيَّة بين الدَّلالة اللسانيَّة والمضمون، ثمَّ على مناقشة الوسائط المتعلّقةِ بمختَلف التَّصوُّرات المعاصرة لِحدود الدَّلالة والتَّداوليّات، فجاء الكتاب تحليلاً لسانيّاً بمنهج وصفيّ متميّز، يَصِفُ عدداً من الآراء النظريَّة التي دافع المؤلِّفُ من خلالها عن موقفه النَّظريّ بِمعالجة نظريَّة لعدد من الأفكار المتميِّزة في فلسفة اللغة.
فطبيعةُ الأفكار النَّظريَّة التي أثارها كتاب "المعنى الحَرْفي" منذُ صدوره عام 2004 باللغة الإنكليزيَّة، أشعلت فتيل النِّقاش والجدل في الأبحاث والدَّوريّات المتخصِّصة في اللسانيّات وفلسفة اللغة، بشأن ما يُقَدّمُه المعنى الحَرْفي من إشكالات، فكان ذلك دافعاً قويّاً إلى ترجمة هذا الكتاب إلى لغات متعدِّدة منها الفرنسيَّة والإسبانيَّة واليابانيَّة، ثمّ ها هيَ ذي ترجمتُهُ إلى اللغة العربيَّة التي نقدِّمُها إلى القارئ العربيّ الكريم.
