عمّ القرن الثامن زخم فكري متنوع، وهذا النشاط الفكري جاء كتعويض عما أصاب العالم الإسلامي من انتكاسة وتراجع في سائر المجالات؛ وكمحاولة لاسترداد النفس وإعادة الحيوية لهذا الجسم، جسم أمة الإسلام، فقد انتبه العلماء والفقهاء بعد غفوة إلى المناخ المأساوي لعصرهم، فحاول كلّ بطريقته المساهمة في تشخيص الوضع المتدهور وتقويمه وتجاوز العوائق السياسية والفكرية المتلاحقة عليه، الأمر الذي أوجد غنى واختلافاً في الرؤى التقويمية، وولد محاولات واضحة "للتنظير"، التنظير للشريعة والتنظير للتاريخ، ومن هؤلاء العلماء الكبار الذين قاموا بمحاولة إصلاحية، الإمام الشاطبي الذي توجه بإصلاحه إلى الأمة الإسلامية كلها.
وكما يرى أن الإصلاح الذي يدعو إليه لا يكتب له النجاح إلا بشرطين هما: أن يتبناه العلماء الذين يقتدى بهم، وأن يقع العمل به في الأماكن العامة والمساجد. وإن هذا الإصلاح موجه أساساً إلى إحياء السنن وإماتة البدع، وإن العمل به في الأماكن العامة يظهر الإسلام الحق، ويميت البدع والمنكرات التي شوهته.
وإذن، فتخليص الإسلام من البدع، والرجوع به إلى ما كان عليه من الصدر الأول هو قوام مصنف الشاطبي الذي عالج فيه موضوع البدعة بأسلوب متميز، هادف، متناسب مع مشروعه الإصلاحي هذا. وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، وقد تجلى عمل المحقق بتخريج الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية وشرح بعض الكلمات المبهمة وبتقديم الكتابة بترجمة للمؤلف تضمنت: اسمه ونسبه، ولادته، وفاته، وعصره، شيوخه، تلاميذه، مؤلفاته، كما عرض فيها فكرة كتاب الاعتصام ومشروع الشاطبي الإصلاحي ونقده للبدعة من خلال مصنفه هذا.
