السوسيولوجية كعلم يفترض بها أن تكون معرفة تقدم بالأساس فهماً للواقع الاجتماعي بكافة قطاعاته، ليس فقط بالنظر إلى الواقع الاجتماعي كمعطى مادي ملموس وملحوظ، باعتباره واقعاً في المشكلات والقضايا التي تتطلب حلاً، والسوسيولوجية، وسوسيولوجية الثقافة تحديداً، ستظل فقيرة مهما بلغت دقتها الوصفية الوضعية، إذا لم تقدم فهماً، أي إذا لم تكن على "فهم" بالأساس خوصاً وأن من أهم ما تبحث فيه، ذلك الجانب الذي يصنف كقيم وأخلاق ومعايير اجتماعية، أي أن الثقافة، كموضوع، ليست موضوعاً منغلقاً ولا يجب أن تعتبره السوسيولوجية "مادة" فقط. ولكنها إنتاج متشابك بالإنسان وطموحاته وخلفياته السلوكية الواعية وغير الواعية. ومحمد الدغمومي في كتابه هذا يقدم دراسة سوسيو-ثقافية في هذا الإطار، وكان حرصاً شديداً، في الابتعاد عن افتعال تقني ووصفي، وأيضاً على عدم الادعاء بأن الحقيقة تأتي من الميدان ومن الحالات المعزولة. وذلك في سبيل أن تكون هذه الدراسة لتقنع بأن ترصد جملة من المشكلات الكفيلة بالاقتراب إلى الواقع الاجتماعي لامتلاك "وعي بأبعاد حياتنا الاجتماعية ماضيها وحاضرها".
