حتى عام 1832 كانت المسألة الشرقية ترقد تحت غطاء هش، تفاهم على بقائه المتنافسون الطامعون في أملاك الرجل المريض (الإمبراطورية العثمانية المتهالكة) وبمحاولة محمد علي الدخول كلاعب بين المتنافسين اختل التوازن وتمزق الغطاء، غطاء التفاهم. فما أن دخل سورية حتى تحركت أساطيل قيصر روسيا شرقاً وعبرت مضيق البوسفور والأساطيل الحربية للترويكة الأوروبية (النماس، بروسيا، فرنسا وبريطانيا) غرباً متجهة إلى الشواطىء السورية والمصرية وراحت عجلة الأحداث تتسارع.
يعالج هذا الكتاب شقين: الشق الأول يحاول الإجابة عن السؤال: هل كان صراع محمد علي مع سيده، السلطان العثماني، ودخوله إلى سورية يحمل مشروعاً نهضوياً أم أنه كان مجرد طموحات شخصية؟
وأما الشق الثاني فيعالج انفجار الأزمة، أزمة المسألة الشرقية بسبب دخول محمد علي إلى سورية وما سبّبه من الخوف عند أصحاب المصالح.
وحين أدرك كل من محمد علي والسلطان العثماني أن استمرار خلافهما سيكون شراً عليهما لجأ إلى تحكيم المنطق ونحّيا جانباً خلافاتهما واتفقا على التسوية. ولكن كان الأمر قد فات. فلم يُعترف لهما بهذا الإتفاق. بل أريد لهما اتفاق آخر، نُفّذ بالقوة.
كان هذا منذ ما يقرب من 160 عاماً. فهل على من ينظر في أيامنا الراهنة أن يتبصر؟!
