لم كان الموتى يتكلمون؟ ربما كانت أخبرته، وقد رأت المقص في جيبه، أن ما سيقدم عليه خطأ مهما كان، ولعلها نصحته بالعودة من حيث أتى، ولربما طمأنها أن تنام قريرة العين وتسكن في سلام، فلقد فكر في الأمر ملياً.
تابع سيره، مر بقبر حديث الحفر، ربما حفر هذا الصباح ليستريح فيه جثمان جديد. حدد مكانه جيداً على الخريطة التي معه لأمر في نفسه. أخيراً وجد ضآلته: قبر فخم تحف به وتغطيه أكاليل الزهور والورود. نظر حوله، ولما تأكد أن لا أحد في الجوار، اقترب وركع بمحاذاته كمن يصلي بخشوع. تأكد ثانية من عدم وجود أحد قبل أن يستل مقصه من جيبه ويأخذ في تقطيع الورود الحمراء فقط، وإخفائها بسرعة البرق في جيوبه الداخلية.
كان لهاثه المتسارع وبخار أنفاسه ينبعث كدخان سيجارة سحب منها مدخن نفساً طويلاً. ربما قطع عشراً من الورود قبل أن ينهض مغادراً المكان بسرعة لص أتم مهمته ولم يبق له سوى الهرب من مسرح الجريمة.
في هروبه مر بقبر صديقته، فلم يقف هذه المرة لتحيتها ولا لوداعها. كان شعوره بالذنب والخجل أقوى مما تخيل.
قد تسأله ساخرة: "وهل صدقت برنارد شو بهذه السرعة، وجئت لتنتقم من واضعي الورود على القبور؟".
