"إن آلاماً عظيمة، آلاماً لم يسبق لها مثيل، تنتظر كل ذي نفس كبيرة فينا، إذ ليس على الواحد منا أن ينكر ذاته فحسب، بل عليه أن يسير وحيداً بلا أمل ولا عزاء، لأن حياتنا الإجتماعية والروحية فاسدة. فكيفما قلبت طرفك رأيت حولك نفوساً صغيرة متذمرة من الظلمة التي هي فيها، ولكنها لا تجرؤ على الخروج إلى النور. وإذا وُجدت نفسٌ تمد يدها إليك، مريدة أن ترافقك في سيرك نحو النور وُجدت ألف يد أخرى قد امتدت إليها لتبقيها في الظلمة.
فإذا وجدت فيك عواطف تحملك على ترك المطالب الأنانية والأغراض الهزيلة، وترفعك نحو مطلب أعلى يسمو على الشؤون الدّنّية، فأنت معذّب عذاباً أليماً بين أبناء هذا الجيل في هذا الوطن السيء الطالع".
