يعرض المؤلّف في هذا الكتاب فرضيَّتَيْن أساسيَّتَيْن: الأولى تقول بأنّ السّعادة هي في متناول الجميع، وعلينا أن نبحث عنها في داخلنا وليس في الخارج، وعلى كلّ منّا أن يتحمَّل المسؤوليَّة كاملة عن تحقيق سعادته، لذا عندما نبحث عن سعادتنا من خلال الآخرين أو الأشياء نكون في توجّه خاطئ، فالسّعادة التي تستمرّ لا بدّ ان تنبع من الدّاخل.
أمّا الفرضيَّة الثّانية فتقول بأنَّ السّعادة ليست هدفاً بحدّ ذاتها، بل هي نتيجة لأمور أخرى تسعى إليها، ومن ثمّ ينتقل جان باول إلى الحديث عن الإنسان الذي يختبر السّعادة في حياته من خلال القيام بمهمّات عشر، فهو يصف تلك المهمّات بدقّة ويقدّم تمارين عمليّة تساعد على تحقيقها، وينتهي إلى القول بأنّ هذه الطريقة تنجح بقدر ما نصرف من الجهد في سبيل إنجاحها.
