تحت عنوان (الأزرقي وموارده في كتابة أخبار مكة وما جاء فيه من الآثار) يقدم الباحث أحمد هاشم محمد صالح السبعاوي، دراسة في كتاب "أخبار مكة" للأزرقي الذي يعد رائد الكتابة في تاريخ المدن ومؤرخ النصف الأول من القرن الثالث للهجرة – وهو عصر سيطرة العباسيين على مقاليد الخلافة، حيث تمتعت البلاد بشيء من الإستقرار السياسي وحركة تأليف علمي ونضوج الحركة العلمية وتشجيع الخلفاء للعلماء على البحث والتدوين. في مثل هذه الأجواء عاش الأزرقي المحدث والمؤرخ وألّف كتابه "أخبار مكة" الذي حظي بمكانة كبيرة عند العلماء وكتب عن الكثير، وذلك لأهميته في تسليط الضوء على تاريخ المعالم العمرانية ومكانة مكة الدينية المتميزة. إذ يقدم الكتاب معلومات مفصلة عن خطط مكة وعن الرباع والآبار، ويتكلم عن الحرم الشريف والمناطق المحيطة به، والشعائر المتصلة بها والأماكن المقدسة الأخرى. وتأتي أهمية الكتاب أيضاً من استثارة الناس لزيارة الأماكن المقدسة وتقديم دليل مرشد للحج. وقد أدى الأزرقي عملاً جليلاً إذ حفظ الروايات التاريخية من الضياع فيما يتعلق ببناء الكعبة منذ تاريخها الموغل في القدم وإلى عهد الحجاج إبن يوسف الثقفي (ت 95ه /713م)، وكذا في نشأة مكة ونزول القبائل فيها واتساع العمران وتفرق البطون، هذا ما عدا احتواء الكتاب على كثير من الأشعار والقصائد لعصر ما قبل الإسلام وبعده، وذكر الكتاب أخبار عدد من الخلفاء العباسيين وقبلهم الأمويين مع ذكر بعض الولاة على مكة، وتضمن الكتاب أيضاً أحاديث شريفة تتعلق بالمسجد الحرام ومواطن ومناسك الحج مثل عرفة ومنى ومزدلفة وغيرها.
من هنا تشكل دراسة الباحث السبعاوي في هذا الكتاب إضافة جديدة لمجموع الدراسات التي تناولت "أخبار مكة" والكشف عن واحد من كبار المؤرخين في تواريخ المدن.
