هذا الكتاب هو محاضرات كان ألقاها أندريه سيغفريد في مناسبات متفرقة ثم جمعها في كتاب، وهو متأثر في إختيار عنوانه بصديقه وزميله غوستاف لوبون، قدّم سيغفريد لهذه المحاضرات بفصل أول تحدث فيه عما كانت عليه حال الشعوب (الغربية) في الميادين السياسية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية قبل الحربين العالميتين الكبيرتين الأولى والثانية، ثم انتقل إلى الحديث عن خمسة شعوب يرى أنها تمثل أرقى ما في البشرية من حضارة، وهي: اللاتين، والأنكلوسكسون، والألمان، والروس، والأميركيون، وهو بإختياره هذا حصر الحضارة في شعوب القارة الأوروبية وإمتدادها الأميركي الشمالي.
في هذه المحاضرات يسلط أندريه سيغفريد الضوء على ما يسميه "روح الشعوب"، ويعني ذلك مزاجها النفسي، ليطرح سؤاله الإشكالي: هل تغيّرت هذه الشعوب إثر الحربين العالميتين؟ وجوابه في هذا الكتاب أن روح الشعوب الغربية لم تتغير، وأنها بقيت على ما كانت عليه في الماضي على الرغم من الويلات والكوارث التي عاشتها في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين (صدر الكتاب في عام 1950).
وقد هدف المؤلف من كتابه هذا إلى بيان إختلاف أمزجة الشعوب الغربية ونفسياتها، ودراسة خلفيات تكوين تلك الأمزجة والنفسيات وتحليل مكوناتها وأسباب إختلافها، مع حرصه على إبراز مساهمتها التاريخية الحاسمة في تقدم الحضارة البشرية، على إختلاف إستعداداتها وإمكاناتها.
