هذه دراسة جادة سعت لتأصيل فن السيرة في أدبنا الحديث، الذي لم يكن شأن كبير في أدبنا القديم. وتكمن أهميتها في أنها جمعت بين النظرية والتطبيق فتحدثت-باستقصاء-عن طبيعة الفن، وظروف نشأته، والعوامل التي أثرت فيه، ومدى صلته بالفنون النثرية الأخرى، وقد مثل هذا الإطار النظري للدراسة. تبعه الجانب التطبيقي الذي أنصب على ثلاثة نماذج في السيرة، لثلاثة أعلام هم:
جبرا إبراهيم جبرا، فدوى طوقان، وإحسان عباس، الذين اتفقوا في الأصول بيئة، ونشأة وثقافة في فلسطين، واختلفوا في النزعات والميول ففدوى طوقان-الشاعرة الأنثى- راوحت في اعترافاتها بين الجرأة والتردد في آن. وجبرا روائي ملحق في عالم الخيال بأجنحة من الواقع. وإحسان عباس ناقد ذو منهج صارم. لقد كان هؤلاء الثلاثة-بتباين ميولهم، وتعدد نزعاتهم التي انعكست على سيرة كل منهم-نماذج دالة على كتابة السيرة في أدبنا الحديث.
لقد أحسنت تهاني شاكر في اختيار الموضوع ووقفت في تناوله: منهجاً، وعرضاً وأسلوباً. إن دراستها جديدة بالاهتمام والتقدير بين الدراسة الأدبية المعاصرة.
