في صفحات هذا الكتاب تدوين لتاريخ منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة، المعروفة اختصاراً باليونسكو. إن هذا الاسم شائع على ألسنة الناس، غير أن عدداً غير قليل منهم قد لا يعرف كيف ظهرت هذه المنظمة إلى الوجود وما الذي كانت، ولم تزل، تقوم به من مهمات.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليجيب عن أسئلة متعددة تراود أذهان الكثيرين، فيتناول تاريخ نشوء المنظمة وبدايات تأسيسها وتنظيمها، ويتطرق إلى أهدافها الكثيرة، المتشعبة دائماً والمتداخلة أحياناً، ويسرد بالتفصيل مسيرة عملها.
يضم الكتاب عرضاً لما جرى في اليونسكو خلال زهاء نصف قرن (من عام 1946 إلى عام 1993) من أحداث، وما تم من إنجازات، ويوجز إسهامات الأفراد الذين مروا في أروقة المنظمة، ومنهم عدد من الشخصيات العالمية المعروفة في شتى ميادين الفكر الإنساني.
وفي طيات الكتاب بيان لما قامت به اليونسكو من أعمال تجسد محاولاتها لوضع مهمتها الأولى موضع التنفيذ، ألا وهي بناء السلام في عقول البشر أولاً، بعد ما شهده العالم من تدمير في الحرب العالمية الثانية. فقد وردت في مستهل حيثيات الميثاق التأسيسي للمنظمة جملة بعينها كان قد جاء نصفها على لسان سياسي، فأتم نصفها الثاني شاعر، وأدخلها المؤسسون في صدر الميثاق لتعلن أنه "لما كانت الحروب تتولد في عقول البشر، ففي عقولهم يجب أن تبنى حصون السلام". وسيجد القارئ في صفحات هذا الكتاب ما يكفي من معلومات عن أنشطة اليونسكو ليحكم بنفسه على مدى أداء المنظمة لمسؤولياتها في تحقيق أغراضها خلال مسيرتها الطويلة.
