وبالرغم من تناول هذا الكتاب لأساليب التقييم بأنواعها الرسمية وغير الرسمية كمكونات لنضام تقييم شامل في الطفولة المبكرة، فهو جاء أيضاً ليركز على أحد الإتجاهات المعاصرة في تقييم الأطفال الصغار ألا وهو التقييم الحقيقي أو تقييم الأداء؛ ويستعرض الكتاب أربعة أجزاء رئيسة، حيث يقدم الجزء الأول لمحة عريضة عن تاريخ التقييم ويركز الجزء الثاني على الإختبارات المقننة ومن ثم يقدم الجزء الثالث تفصيلاً لأساليب التقييم غير الرسمية بما في ذلك الملاحظة وقوائم الرصد وسلالم التقدير، أما الجزء الرابع فيتناول التركيز على ضرورة إحداث شراكة الوالدين وأولياء الأمور لتقرير تقدم الطفل ونموه.
