مثّلت المنطقة الواقعة شرقي البحر المتوسط، منذ اندلاع الأزمة السورية في أواخر العام 2011 ساحة خلفية للصراع الأمريكي - الروسي. وكثيراً ما يدور الحديث عن أن الوقائع الجيوسياسية التي تتشكل في الشرق الأوسط باتت تؤثر تأثراً مباشراً في الوضع داخل روسيا ذاتها.
فموسكو، ومنذ بداية الأزمة في سوريا، وقفت بشكل واضح وصريح مع النظام السوري الذي يمثّل حليفاً استراتيجياً لروسيا في المنطقة العربية في مواجهة المجموعات المسلحة المتطرفة والتكفيرية التي قدّمت لها الولايات المتحدة وحلفاؤها دعماً عسكرياً وإعلامياً وسياسياً، عبر إعلان المسؤولين الأميركيين عن تسليح تلك المجموعات في مواجهة النظام، وسياسياً من خلال إدانة النظام السوري، والمطالبة باتخاذ خطوات ضده في مختلف المنابر الدولية والعالمية.
وفي حقيقة الأمر يعود الموقف الروسي الداعم للنظام القائم في سوريا إلى أسباب عدة ومواقع مختلفة، لا تبدأ من خشية موسكو أن تفقد موطىء القدم الوحيد لها في المنطقة. وهو قاعدة طرطوس المطلة على البحر المتوسط؛ وهي المنطقة التي تسيطر عليها الولايات المتحدة نفوذاً وقواعد عسكرية، كما لا تتوقف عند إمدادات الغاز الطبيعي من سوريا إلى أوروبا، ولا تنتهي عند رفض موسكو الدائم للموقف الأميركي الداعم لنمو المجموعات والمنظمات السلفية المتطرّفة في المنطقة والتي قد تمتد مخاطر نشاطاتها وممارساتها إلى الأراضي الروسية ومواقع نفوذها في آسيا الوسطى.
