إن العصر العباسي من أغنى العصور الأدبية التي شهدت ازدهاراً بيناً على الساحتين: الشعرية والنثرية في تطور المعاني والمباني، وكانت هذه المدة جديرة بالدراسة والبحث لذا وجه هاشم مناع جل اهتمامه إلى إصدار سلسلة تضم أبرز شعراء هذا العصر وكتابه. وقد سارت هذه السلسلة على طريقة متناسقة، ومنهج موحد، هو: إظهار شخصية الشاعر، وتحليل نموذجين من أشعاره، ثم إيراد نموذج ثالث مختار دون تحليل، مع العناية بإبراز أهم الخصائص الفنية في شعره.
ولما كان بشار بن برد من أبرز الشعراء المخضرمين في الدولتين: الأموية والعباسية فقد كان هو الأول في هذه السلسلة. من المعروف أن بشار بن برد حاز على اهتمام العلماء، وإعجاب النقاد والباحثين لما تميز به من طريقته الفريدة القادرة على التصوير، فهو شاعر مطبوع، سلك طريقاً لم يسلك، وأحسن فيه، وتفرد به، وهو أكثر الشعراء تصرفاً وفنون شعر، وأغزرهم نظماً، وأوسعهم بديعاً.
وقد جاءت هذه الدراسة لتؤكد ما ذكرناه، فهي دراسة موجزة عن حياة بشار بن برد، وبالرغم من إيجازها فقد وضحت: أصله، وشخصيته، وحياته، وأخيراً وفاته. وحرصت على تحليل قصيدتين من قصائده، وإثبات قصيدة دون تحليل، وسلطت الضوء على رأي القدامى فيه ورأيه-هو-في شعره، وخلصت إلى تدوين أبرز خصائصه الفنية. ولعل القارئ يجد في هذا البحث: الدراسة التاريخية الموجزة، والأدبية المعمقة، والنقدية الممعنة، والتحليلية الواسعة.
