شكري محمود نديم (1919-2012) باحث ومترجم وكاتب عراقي ولد بالموصل شمال العراق. أنهى دراسته الابتدائية والثانوية فيها وتخرج في الكلية العسكرية عام 1938 وواصل دراسته في الكلية العسكرية البريطانية وفي كليتي الأركان العراقية والبريطانية، وفي كلية الآداب حيث حصل على الدكتوراه في فلسفة التاريخ، عمل في مناصب عسكرية مختلفة وشغل منصب مدير الحركات العسكرية برتبة عميد ركن وهو أخر منصب عسكري تسلمه قبل إحالته إلى التقاعد عام 1958 وهو عضو في اتحاد المؤرخين العرب واتحاد الكتاب والمؤلفين. حصل على وسام الرافدين وأوسمة أخرى، مارس المحاماة وألف عدة بحوث وتراجم.

إن لهذه الدراسة فائدة مزدوجة، فهي بالإضافة لما تزخر به من أمثلة لتطبيق مبادئ الحرب الأساسية وللعوامل المؤثرة على قرارات القادة وعلى تنفيذ خططهم، فإنها دارت في جزء عزيز من الوطن العربي الكبير، كان دوماً مطمع أنظار الغاصبين، ولا يزال اليوم جزء منه تحت سيطرتهم مع الأسف الشديد.
فلا يخفي أن لدرس تأثير الأرض على الحركات العسكرية قيمة كبيرة في تفهم طبيعتها تفهماً تاماً، على أن يوضع نصب العين دوماً، أن هذا التأثير في تطور مستمر بالنظر لتبدل طبيعة الأسلحة وما يطرأ على قابليات القوات العسكرية من تغير، نتيجة ما يبتكره العلم الحديث لتسهيل عملها.
وقد قمت بتأليف هذا الكتاب بناء على إلحاح الكثير من إخواني وتلامذتي ورجائي أن أكون عند حسن ظنهم، وأن أوفق في وضع مصدر إضافي بين أيديهم ليكون متمماً لما يتيسر لديهم من معلومات.
