إنه لما كان علم الدلالة تتقاسمه عدة علوم، كان من حق كل علم على حدة أن يدّعي هذا العلم من اختصاصه. لكن الذي يضيع في هذه القسمة هو المرجع، أي الذي إليه يرجع اللفظ وتؤول إليه القضية. فينبغي إذن ألا نتوه في نظريات الدلالة على حساب الشيء الواقعي المشار إليه، إذ كانت الحقائق لا تنقلب بالأسماء ولا تتغير، إذن لا تنفك نظرية الدلالة عن المرجع ولا تنفصل عنه، والغوص المجموعة في هذا الكتاب تحاول أن تعطي القارئ فكرة عن مدى خصوبة نظريات الدلالة والمرجع، ولكنها خصوبة معقدة، ومن الراجح أن هذا التعقيد وهذه الصعوبة راجعان إلى أن هذه النصوص تخفي أرضية فلسفية ميتافيزيقية وتيارات سيكولوجية ضمنية، لذلك اقتضى الحال من المترجم إبراز شكل هذه الأرضية على قدر المستطاع.
