إن هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لإعادة كتابة تاريخ شعراءٍ أثَّرت بتاريخهم أهواء الرواة الدينية والسياسية والاجتماعية. إنه محاولة لنفض المسلمات التي يتناقلها المؤرخون عن هؤلاء الشعراء، وإعادة التفكير فيما لم يعُد من المُفكَّر فيه. إنه محاولة لتخليص بعض الشعراء من الهالة المقدسة، وإعادة موضعتهم في مجتمعاتهم كبشر لهم غرائزهم وأخطاؤهم وخيباتهم، مثلنا تماماً.
إنه محاولة لتعرية تدخلات المجتمع بتيارته الفكرية والسياسية في كتابة التاريخ. إنه محاولة لتصفية التراجم السقيمة من التناقضات المنطقية والخيالات الجمعية والمبالغات القصصية. وكل ذلك استناداً على معالجة أشعارهم باستخدام أدوات النقد الأدبي، التي أفرزتها المدرسة الاجتماعية والمدرسة النفسية في الأدب.
وإختيار هؤلاء الشعراء لم يكن إختياراً إعتباطياً، بل إختياراً مبنياً على أساس رؤية ثقافية ترى في المشكلات التي تثيرها معالجة ترجماتهم صلةً بواقعنا الثقافي، وبالتالي فالتعرض لتلك المشكلات في الترجمات القديمة هو تعرض لمشكلات حديثة في ثقافتنا المعاصرة بشكل غير مباشر.
