والكتاب الحالي يقدم نظرة في سيرته، ويعرض تمهيداً لمعالم دراسية عقائدية إسلامية عند الإمامين أحمد بن حنبل، وأبي عبد الله البخاري، وصولاً إلى درسه له في كتابه "الاختلاف في اللفظ والرد على الجهمية والمشبهة" حيث يستجلي مواقفه وآراءه في قضايا ومشكلات صعبة وأحداث وشؤون عقائدية إسلامية، ويبين ما يتسم به هذا الكتاب من خصائص مختلفة ويتبع ذلك بتحقيقه وبالشرح الجلي لما غمض فيه وزاد في اقتضابه، أو يكتفي بمجرد رمزه، أو الإشارة إليه، هادفاً إلى أن يستوي ابن قتيبة عبر هذا الأثر الفكري الإسلامي، كما هو في الواقع، واحداً من كبار رواد الكتابة في العقيدة الإسلامية. وإنه يتميز في ذلك بأكثر من موقف واتجاه ليكون الإمام والعالم والمصلح، والأديب والناقد العقائدي الملتزم.
