أكثر فقهاء الحنابلة من المؤلفات الفقهية ما بين مختصر ومطول، متون وشروح، وحواش وتعليقات، وسارت كتبهم في الأقطار والأمصار، وإن من أحسن مختصراتهم كتاب "زاد المستنقع" للإمام العلامة موسى بن أحمد الحجاوي، كيف لا وهو مختصر لمقنع شيخ المذهب موفق الدين بن قدامة، فقد جمع بإختصاره ما يغني عن التطويل كما ذكره مؤلفه في مقدمته، وقد شرحه العلامة محقق المذهب الشيخ منصور البهوتي شرحاً ممتازاً ليس بالطويل الممل ولا بالقصير المحلّ، وقد أغناه بقرنه كل مسألة بدليلها وتعليلها.
هذا وقد اهتم الشيخ منصور الهوتي مع هذا بخدمة كتب المذهب وشرح أربعة من أهمها، وهي: كتاب الإقناع، وكتاب المنتهى، وكتاب المفردات؛ إضافة إلى كتابه الروض المربع، وقد اعتنى بشروحه تلك بذكر الدليل والتعليل غالباً، وربما وجد للحكم الواحد أكثر من تعليل فيكتفي بأحدها أو تذكر كلها، وربما لم تظهر وجه الكلمة فيطلقون عليه الحكم التعبدي، يعني: نتمثله تعبداً وإن لم تظهر لنا علته.
وقد عكف على هذا الشرح (الروض المربع) الشيخ مساعد بن عبد الله السلمان وعمد إلى إستخراج منه ما يختص بالمسائل من دليل وتعليل، وقام بإفرادها بهذا المؤلف المستقل، ليكون أقرب لفهمها وإستحضارها، حيث تتبع تلك الأبواب والفصول، واستخرج منها تلك الأدلة التفصيلية والتعليلات الفرعية حسب ترتيبها، فجاء هذا المؤلف المستقل وقد تميز بأسلوبه السهل، وجودة ترتيبه، يستفيد منه المطلع عليه فقه المسائل بدليلها وتعليلها بأسهل طريق، ولا يختص بهذا الكتاب وحده، بل هو شامل لجميع كتب المذهب، والراجح لدى أحمد بن حنبل، وربما عمد إلى حذف مسائل منه نادرة الوقوع، وزاد ما على مثله يُعتَمَدْ، إذ الهمم قد قصرت، والأسباب المثبطة عن نيل المراد قد كثرت، ومع صغر حجمه فقد حوى ما يغني عن التطويل.
وهذه هي المسائل الفقهية التي تضمنها هذا الكتاب: الطهارة، الصلاة، الجنائز، الزكاة، الصيام، المناسك، الجهاد، البيع، الوقف، الوصايا، الفرائض، العتق، النكاح، الطلاق، الإيلاء، الظهار، اللعان، العدد، الإستبراء، الرضاع، النفقات، الجنايات، الديات، الحدود، الأطعمة، الإيمان، القضاء، الشهادات، الإقرار.
