يضمّ هذا الكتاب بجزأيه تفسيراً لآيات القرآن الكريم. وكان نهج المفسر على النحو التالي: يقدم آية للتفسير، ثم يأتي بآية أو آيتين أو مجموعة آيات من نفس الصورة التي منها الآية المقدمة، أو من غيرها، وقد يأتي بشيء من نفس الآية المقدمة مما يفسرها، أو يفسر بعضها، ويضيف إليها من نحوها من الآيات كمزيد في البيان بما فيها التي تذكر وجهاً أو أكثر من المعاني. منها ما سبق لغيره ذكره، ومنها مما وفق لاستخراجه وقد لا يضيف اكتفاءً بما اختصره أو اقتصر عليه بحيث يعطي مجموع ذلك أو بعضه، تفسيراً أو شرحاً للآية المقدمة للتفسير. وقد لا يذكر خلال تفسيره شيئاً عن كتب التفسير أو ما إليها، فإنه إنما يذكر ما له صلة أو أكثر من صلة بالآية المقدمة، تفسيراً أو استشهاداً عابراً ليس إلاً، وربما يناقش بعضهم مناقشة عابرة أو يعلق تعليقاً خاطفاً ليعزل ما يرغب فيه في التوسع أكثر في الجزء الثاني الذي سماه "بالملحق".
