محور هذا الكتاب هو الأطفال والشباب الفلسطينيون الذين يعيشون داخل وخارج المخيمات من منطقة الشرق الأوسط. ومنذ أكثر من نصف قرن، يعيش هؤلاء الأطفال ومقدموا الرعاية لهم وجوداً موقتاً في المحيط الدراماتيكي وغير المستقر سياسياً الذي يسمى الشرق الأوسط هؤلاء الأطفال كانوا عرضة بمختلف أنواع التنميط بوجهيه الأكاديمي والشعبي. لقد كانوا مستهدفين، مثلهم مثل آبائهم وأجدادهم من قبلهم، باعبتارهم ضحايا سلبيين لا ينتفعون من أي حماية دولية. وأصبحوا المستفيدين من عدد من رزم المساعدات الإنسانية التي تفترض النموذج الغربي لنمو الطفل، وكذلك المقاربة النفس اجتماعية الغربية.
يهدف هذا الكتاب من خلال إسماع أصوات الأطفال ضمن إطار مجتمعهم إلى اكتشاف الأثر الذي تركته وما زالت تتركه الهجرة العشرية والنزاع الطويل الأمد في حياة هؤلاء الأطفال اللاجئين بعيداً عن النماذج النمطية أو ذات الطابع الغربي.
