لشدة ولعه بالذهب أصبح بطل رواية (النحّال) لماكسنس فرمين (نحّالاً). لم يكن يطمع بجمع الثروات، ولا كان جني العسل يمنحه أية فرصة للثراء، غير أنه، بكل ما يفعله، كان يبحث عما يسميه بفرادة ذهب الحياة.
كان أورليان شاباً يسعى إلى الجمال، فلم تكن الحياة بالنسبة له تستحق أن تُعاشر لولا بضع لحظات تعبرها من السحر المصفى.
بلغ أورليان سنة 1885 عامه العشرين وبدأ يحلم بالنحل، كان لديه مشروع في إنشاء نحو عشرة قفران لإنتاج العسل. كان يعلم أنه سيصبح النحّال الوحيد في (لانغلاد)، والعسل الذي سوف يبيعه سيكون الأجود في بروفانس كلها.
وكان هذا المشروع يكفي، رغم غرابته، ليحوّل حياته إلى حلم.
لقد كانت الحياة بالنسبة لأورليان نحلةً غريبةً من الذهب تلمع من بعيد، تطير منتشية، وهي تنتقل من عطر إلى عطر، تصطدم بزجاج الشمس، وتبحث في سعة السماء عن رحيق زهرتها الخاص.
منذ ذلك اليوم، الذي حطت على يده نحلة محملة بغبار الطلع، حلم أورليان بالعسل واختار أن يصبح نحّالاً.
