تنقسم المعادلات التفاضلية إلى جزءين: معادلة تفاضلية عادية ومعادلة تفاضلية جزئية، وإذا كان حلّ المعادلة التفاضلية العادية ليس بالأمر اليسير فما هو الحال بالنسبة للمعادلات التفاضلية الجزئية التي تتضمن أكثر من متغير مستقل واحد!.
إن معظم الدوال التي تصف مسألة هندسية أو ظاهرة أو عملية فيزيائية هي دوال في متغيرين مستقلين أو أكثر. وهذا الكتاب يقدم دراسة وافية للمعادلات التفاضلية الجزئية حيث يضمّ بين طياته تعريف للمعادلة التفاضلية الجزئية، واستعراض المفاهيم والنظريات الأساسية، مع التعرض لكيفية نشوء المعادلات التفاضلية الجزئية سواء من حذف ثوابت أو دوال اختيارية من جانب أو وصف مسألة هندسية أو ظاهرة أو عملية فيزيائية من جانب آخر.
ثم يخطو الكاتب بعد ذلك إلى حلول المعادلات التفاضلية الجزئية من الرتبة الأولى خطية كانت أم غير خطية، ثم ينتقل إلى المعادلات التفاضلية الجزئية على اختلاف رتبها.
وقد ختم المؤلف كتابه ببعض الأمثلة والتطبيقات الهامة والمتنوعة وهذا المؤلف موجّه إلى طلاب المراحل المتوسطة والمتأخرة من كليات الهندسة والمعاهد الفنية العليا كما أنه يتجه أيضاً لطلاب العلوم التطبيقية الأخرى كما أن جمهور المهندسين الشباب منهم والقدماء يجدون في هذا الكتاب خير معين لهم على تحديث معلوماتهم الرياضية وتعريفهم بالطرق الرياضية الحديثة.
