يوسف باسيل شلحت عالم اجتماعي وإثنولوجي كرس أبحاثه، في المركز الوطني للبحوث العلمية (باريس)، لقضايا عربية إسلامية شائكة: من علم الاجتماع الديني، إلى الأضاحي، وبنى المقدس عند العرب، مروراً بعلم اجتماع الإسلام، بالقبائل والعشائر.
بموضوعية وبنزاهة عالمية نادرة، يضيء هذا الكتاب بنية المجتمع العربي عشية ظهور الإسلام، مبيناً دور العرب في استقبال دينهم الجديد، انطلاقاً من المدن العربية (مكة- الطائف- المدينة)، كاشفاً وجهاً آخر للعرب، حيث كان وعيهم الثقافي في مستوى تقبل الوحي.
للمرة الأولى، في القرن العشرين، ينهض باحث عربي ليتناول، بالفرنسية، مسألة المقدس بوصفه موضوع دراسة، فيؤسس على أعماله السوسيولوجية علم اجتماع غير إيديولوجى، مع أن موضوعه ديني.
وليس قليلاً ما أنجزه يوسف شحلت بمفرده على مدى خمسين عاماً من البحوث الاجتماعية، فهذا الكتاب الذي يعود إلى 1958، تقرأه اليوم وكأنه اليوم وكأنه موضوع الآن للتأمل في لحظة تاريخية حاسمة من لحظات التاريخ الاجتماعي العربي السكون عنها.
هذا الكتاب هو المرجع الأول في علم الاجتماع الديني العربي، المترفه عن فوضى التبرير، عن دعايات الإبهار أو الإشهار، إنه شهادة علمية في زمن كثر فيه (العلم) وندر العلماء الحقيقيون.
