هذا الكتاب ينشد البحث في الظاهراتية التي يحث عنها اد موند هوسرل (1859- 1938) حيث يعد هذا الفيلسوف رائداً من رواد المنهج الظاهراتي ومؤسساً للحرمة الظاهراتية في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين.
تعتبر الظاهراتية علم وصفي أو منهج يقوم على وصف الفعاليات والنشاطات التي تجري من خلالها تعرف الذات، الوعي على الوقائع والمعطيات والظواهر، من أجل الوصول إلى الماهيات، أما فيما يتعلق بالجانب الذاتي لهذا المنهج فإنه يتجلى في الوعي أو فيما يسميه هو سرد بالقصدية إن قصد الشيء هو التوجه إليه.. انه كل فعل معيش يتوجه إلى شيء فإذا الادراك ادراك لشيء، والتمثل تمثل لشيء، والتذكر تذكر لشيء، إن معنى ذلك برأيه أن الوعي أو الإدراك هو وعي وإدراك لشيء ما، وليس وعياُ خالصاً خالياً من كل معطى كما عند ديكارت، وكذلك فهو ليس وعياُ يقوم على مقولات قبلية كما عند كانط... وهكذا يناقش هذا الكتاب اختلاف هوسيرل من حيث تركيزه على ثنائية الذات/ الموضوع مع آخرين من فلاسفة القرن السابع عشر وما تلاها وخصوصاً هايد غر الذي يعتبر أن كينونة الكائن لا يمكن اختزالها واذابتها لتكون معطى في الوعي ولذلك سعى إلى إيجاد علم لتأويل هذه الكينونة وذلك بالعودة صعوداً نحو عالمها الأول، أي العالم phenomenology كما تعني عند الاغريق في ذلك الوقت.
يأتي هذا الكتاب في مقدمة تضم عنوانين بقلم الدكتور انطوان خوري وهما: 1- بالنيابة –لا بالأصالة –عن هوسرل، 2- بالأصالة –لا بالنيابة –عن الأشياء يلي ذلك خمسة فصول حملت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: الظاهراتية كظاهرة الظاهراتية المتعالية، الفصل الرابع: معنى العني في قصيدته هوسرل، الفصل الخامس: الكوجيتو بين هوسرل وديكارت.
