هذا كتاب موجه إلى العلماء والفلاسفة المعنيين بأسس العلم الحديث المفهومية ومناهجه البحثية، يتوجب ألا يقتصر الإهتمام بالإشكاليات الفلسفية التي يناقشها على المفكرين الذي احترفوا الفلسفة، بل يتعين أن يشغل أمره كل عالم متأمل لم يحل إنهماكه في البحث المتخصص دون قدرته على تبصر القضايا الأساسية.
من جهة أخرى، فإن ظهور الفلسفة التحليلية في البلدان الناطقة بالإنجليزية، الذي ارتبط بتطور المنطق وعلوم الدلالة، جعل تحري الدقة العلمية يأخذ سبيله إلى الفلسفة، ما حسَّن من صيتها عند علماء دأبوا على إنكار أحكامها الإنطباعية الغامضة وتأويلاتها ميتافيزيقية الطابع.
الواقع أن الفلسفة التحليلية تحليل للمفاهيم، ولذا فإنها تعد جزءً مكملاً للعلم بمعناه الدقيق؛ الواقع أن فلسفة العلم هنا لا تتمزّى عن الفلسفة التحليلية إلا في إقتصار التحليلات المطروحة على مفاهيم تتعلق بالعلم على وجه الخصوص، ولذا يتعين أن تتميز عن تصور مغاير لفلسفة العلم يركن إلى التركيب التأملي لنتاجات العلم.
