إن اختيار رواية "مخلوقات الأشواق الطائرة" لإدوار الخراط من أجل مقاربة الفضاء الروائي فيها. لا يسلب باقي الأعمال الروائية التي اهتمت بالفضاء قيمتها التمثيلية، ورغم كون التجريب سؤالاً جماعياً إلا أننا لم ندرس متناً متعدداً ومتبايناً؛ وإنما اكتفينا بنموذج واحد تجبناً للتشتت والتكرار، وتحقيقاً للدقة العلمية والتحكم في المتن، وهي أمور تعتبر من المطالب الأساسية في تحليل النص الروائي، لأننا نريد حصر ملامح تشكل الفضاء في الرواية العربية الجديدة مساهمة منا في تأسيس مشروع نقدي لا يزال في طور التبلور.
وقد أهمل الفضاء من قبل النقد لالتباسه بالمكان الواقعي، حيث ظل لفترة طويلة خاضعاً للقراءة الساذجة. لأن المبدع التقليدي اهتم بوصف المكان والمبالغة في تحديده وتعيينه، وذلك بغية محاكاة الواقع ومطابقته، وقد أثرت هذه الدقة الوصفية سلباً على الفضاء، لتجريدها إياه مفهومه النصي، باعتباره عنصراً خيالياً مختلقاً، كالشخصية والحدث وغيرها من المكونات الحكائية الأخرى. وقد حقق الفضاء مع الرواية الجديدة تخلصه من الإسهابات الوصفية التي سلبته وظيفته، فحقق تقدماً مكَّنه من احتلال مركز هام في البناء السردي، وأثبت حضوره كبنية وكدور وظيفي لا تزييني وكمساهم في الخلق الفني.
وظل النظر إلى الفضاء الروائي باعتباره مرتبطاً بما هو مرجعي إلى أن حقق قفزة نوعية بفضل الدراسات الشعرية والبنيوية الحديثة التي استطاعت الحد من اللبس، والنظر إليه باعتباره موجود من خلال اللغة.
