إن كتاب "المستدرك على الصحيحين" للإمام الحافظ أبي عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الحاكم النيسابوري يعتبر من مصادر السنة النبوية المهمة التي حوت قدراً كبيراً من الحديث الصحيح. فقد أودع فيه صاحبه من الأحاديث الصحيحة ما ليس عن الشيخين البخاري ومسلم ما رآه على شرطيها-وهو أعلى درجات الصحيح-أو على شرط البخاري وحده، على شرك مسلم وحده، وما أداه اجتهاده إلى تصحيحه وإن لم يكن على شرط واحد منها.
ونظراً لهذه المكانة الرفيعة التي يحتلها الكتاب، فقد عمل مجموعة مؤلفين عليه واضعين لأحاديث وآثاره فهرساً ييسر على الباحثين عملية البحث عن أحاديثه. وحتى يكون ميسراً يوفي بالغرض المطلوب منه تمّ ترتيب مادته حسب حروف المعجم أولاً، ثم ترتيبها في مسانيد على أسماء رواتها حسب حروف المعجم أيضاً. معتمدين الطبعة الهندية المطبوعة في بلدة حيدرآباد الدكن مرجعاً لهم.
وحتى يأتي الكتاب جامعاً مهدوا له بمقدمة ذكروا فيها لمحة عن حياة الإمام الحاكم وأخرى عن مستدركه. أما خطتهم في فهرسة الكتاب فكانت كما يلي: أولاً: أثبتوا طرف الحديث سواءً كان قولياً أو فعلياً. ثانياً: الأحاديث التي توافقت أطرافها الأولى، زادوا طرف بعضها حتى يصلوا إلى فارق. ثالثاً: جزءوا الأحاديث التي تشتمل على عدة أحكام. رابعاً: أثبتوا اسم راوي الحديث وأيضاً اسم الكتاب الذي ورد فيه. خامساً: في كتاب التفسير أثبتوا اسم السورة بعد طرف الحديث. سادساً: رتبوا جميع الأسماء على حروف المعجم دون إفراد الكنى أو الأبناء أو النساء.
