يشتمل الكتاب بأجزائه الستة على الأحاديث المروية بأسانيد يحتج بها الإمامان البخاري ومسلم. وقد عمل المصنف الحاكم النيسابوري على إخراج أحاديث، تصح على مقتضى قواعدها التي صوراها، المنصوصة وغير المنصوصة، مما ليس في كتابيهما. وقد جاءت هذه الأحاديث مرتبة ومصنفة ضمن مواضيعها والتي كانت في الإيمان والعلم ثم في أبواب الفقه ومسائله وتفرعاته وقد عمل عبد السلام بن عمر علوش على الاعتناء به وكان عمله كالتالي:
1-ترقيم الأحاديث المرفوعة والآثار والتراجم، 2-وضع الأبواب المناسبة للأحاديث وترقيمها، وهي التي كانت مثبتة بهامش المستدرك، لا في الأصل، وخلت منها المطبوعات، ووضع الأرقام لها، 3-تبيين التحويلات التي أوردها الحاكم في الأسانيد بياناً شافياً. 4-ضبط المتون الواردة بالشكل التام. 5-تخريج الأحاديث مع بيان حكمها ودرجتها، 6-إيراد كلام الحافظ الذهبي الوارد في التلخيصي، من تصحيح أو تضعيف، 7-تبيين الأحاديث الزئدة على الكتب الستة، بوضع نجمة بعد الرقم، مع تحديد الزيادة في الحديث إن احتاج المقام لذلك.
