إن هذا العمل بين يدي القارئ العربي هو ترجمة لكتاب مارك جيمينز الموسوم بــ"الجمالية المعاصرة"، الإتجاهات والرهانات الصادر سنة 2004 ضمن سلسلة الدراسات الجمالية والفنية؛ هذا، ويعتبر مارك جيمنيز أحد الباحثين الفرنسيين الكبار في الحقل الجمالي ومن المتخصصين في فلسفة ثيودور أدورنو.
لقد تطرق المؤلف إلى مختلف القضايا والمسائل المطروحة في الجمالية المعاصرة المليئة بالتيارات والإتجاهات والمذاهب الفنية والجمالية، والتي تعددت على نحو غير مسبوق، وبلغت حداً كبيراً من الإنتشار في الآونة الحاضرة على نطاق واسع، ومن التشعب والتعقيد بحيث أصبح من المتعذر إحصاؤها أو الإلمام بها بالكلية، غير أن المؤلف استطاع إنتقاء وإختيار بعناية أكثرها أهمية وتأثيراً في حياتنا المعاصرة، وعرض مختلف القضايا والمسائل المطروحة في الحقل الفني، وقام بتحليل بعض المفاهيم الأساسية المتعلقة بمفهوم الجمالية وبالخلفية الفلسفية التي أطرتها منذ نشأتها الأولى، كما أنه عالج أهم إشكالاتها والرهانات التي تعرفها اليوم في ظل عالم التكنولوجيا والميديا والصناعة الثقافية، وأجاب على بعض التساؤلات ووضح طروحات بعض التيارات والمذاهب الجمالية التي انتشرت منذ بداية القرن العشرين كالدادائية والتعبيرية والسوريالية، ضمن سياق تاريخي عرف أكثر من أزمة، كالحربين العالميتين والأزمات الإقتصادية والفكرية والوجودية التي عرفها العالم الغربي، والتي انعكست على الحقال الجمالي أو الفني بشكل أو بآخر، كما أنه تطرق أيضاً إلى ما بعد الحداثة التي أبدت إرتياباً بالأصول والأسس الفكرية والفلسفية التي رسختها قيم الحداثة والتنوير.
